Bookman Chapel was founded in 1928 by Eld. Nathan Bookman. Bookman Chapel began small, but grew quickly. The first church's meeting place was a room in Eld. Bookman's parent's house. The house that they lived in was the noisiest house on the street, often disturbing the neighbors. The neighbors were not that close to Eld. Bookman's house. The closet neighbor was 1/2 mile away, but they could still hear the praises and jubilation of Bookman Chapel. The services were held in the house until 1932. Eld. Bookman's parents helped him buy a plot of land near their house. They also helped Eld. Bookman and the church raise money to build a church. The church was completed in 1933. It was a modest little building. The services were always jumping. There was no heat in the winter and no air in the summer, but they had church anyway. A youth church was established when Gabriel Tompkins began running youth revivals in the city. Eld. Bookman allowed the young people to use the sanctuary for the services, revivals, and choir rehearsals. Eld. Bookman allowed the young people to be in charge of all aspects of their services. The church resided in that location until 1947. The church moved to 5438 Lazarus Lane. The church grew and new souls were added as the Lord saw fit. The church did not relocate again until 1983. Eld. Bookman pastored until 1981. Eld. Bookman appointed his son-in-law, Eld. Don Mathis, as pastor once his health began to get bad. Eld. Bookman served as assistant pastor from 1981 until 1992. Eld. Bookman died in 1993 at the age of 84. Under Eld. Mathis' leadership, the church has grown both spiritually and naturally. The church relocated to its current location, 951 Collier Court. The church's membership has doubled. An 8:00 AM service had to be added to accommodate the membership increase. The members of Bookman Chapel have grown both spiritually and naturally. Many of the member's family have gotten saved. Members have received natural blessings as well. God is continuing to bless Bookman Chapel. Bookman Chapel joined the Maddocha Fellowship of Pentecostal Churches in 1990. Currently, a new building is being built to accommodate the church's growth. The new building will seat 4,000. It will also have classrooms, a nursery, ample offices, a bookstore, and a small museum that will house memories of the church. A bust of Eld. Nathan Bookman's head will be placed in the foyer f the new church. Bookman Memorial Chapel will be completed in 2003. |
